Former NBA Player Jackson Vroman Found Dead in California Home

Image
Yesterday was the beginning of a long mourning period for Justin Bieber, Reggie Bush, and anyone else who knew former Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Hornets player Jackson Vroman. The 34-year-old was found dead yesterday in his home's pool after a fatal drowning accident.  Though initial reports claimed Vroman passed in a car accident, "King of Instagram" Dan Bilzerian - a close friend of the man commonly referred to as "The Gentle Giant" - tweeted out what actually happened to diffuse any rumors. "He was sitting down, he got up to go inside the house, tripped on the stairs, hit his head and drown[ed] in the pool," Dan wrote, followed by "#RIP." Since news of his death hit the Internet many have shared their condolences and revisited memories of the man "everyone loved." Vroman had followed in the footsteps of his father, Brett, who played for the Utah Jazz in the early 80's. May he rest in peace. Source: DailyMail

Apple to pay $450 million in e-book price-fixing suit

Image
Apple conspired with publishers to artificially raise the price of e-books, the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled today, upholding a verdict from 2013. Now that the company has lost its appeal, Apple is expected to pay $450 million, most of it to e-book customers. Apple agreed to a $450 million settlement in 2014 as part of the appeals process: If Apple had won in today's ruling, it would have had to pay just $70 million ($50 million of that to customers) or it could have been off the hook entirely. Nearly half a billion dollars is still less than the $840 million plaintiffs sought in the civil antitrust case. For perspective, $450 million is 3 percent of Apple's profit for the quarter ending in December, The Wall Street Journal reports. "We conclude that the district court correctly decided that Apple orchestrated a conspiracy among the publishers to raise e-book prices," Second Circuit Judge Debra Ann Livingston wrote today. How to avoid being charged by Apple Music after the free trial

Image
Apple Music is finally here, along with a free three month trial to let anyone give it a listen. But what if you don't want to be on the hook for a $10 a month subscription fee on September 30? Or, what if you opted into Apple Music by mistake (which is surprisingly easy, since it's the first thing that pops up when you launch the iOS Music app)? Well, you can just disable auto-renewal, just like any other iTunes subscription. To do so, tap the "Account" icon on the top left of the Apple Music app and navigate to View Apple ID (alternatively, you can get there from the iOS Settings app and heading to "iTunes & App Store"). Once you're at your Apple ID settings screen, tap "Manage" under subscriptions, then "Your Membership" and untick the auto-renewal checkbox at the bottom. You'll still be able to test out Apple Music for the next three months, you'll just avoid any surprise charges. If you're on a PC or Mac, you can

Reminder: iOS 8.4 release date and time is today, June 30; update brings Apple Music to the iPhone and iPad

Image
iPhone and iPad users, listen up, as we have a reminder for you. iOS 8.4 – the software update announced by Apple at WWDC 2015 – is almost ready to be released. In fact, it is to be rolled out in just a few short hours. As we reported a couple of days ago, the iOS 8.4 release date is today, June 30, and the update is scheduled to go live at 11:00AM Eastern time (10:00AM CDT / 9:00AM MDT / 8:00AM PDT).  What should you expect the update to introduce? Well, let's start by saying that you're not getting the full feature set of iOS 9 yet. That's coming later this year. What iOS 8.4 does bring, however, is Apple's audio streaming service – Apple Music. Once signed up, you'll have access to millions of songs from popular (and not-so-popular) artists and bands. And if you don't know what to listen to, the Beats 1 live radio will be broadcasting the latest tunes for you 24/7. Apple Music will cost $9.99 per month with a 3-month free trial. You may still tune in to Beat

Sprint throws a jab at T-Mo, AT&T and Verizon: no small print makes David Beckham choose Now Network

Image
David Beckham is an icon in the soccer world, but his popularity transcends beyond just sports, as he's also a fashion icon. Now, he's looking for a phone and a plan, and he wants it simple, with no caveats. Sprint is proud with its simple terms of contract Phonearena And after all, Sprint is still the only carrier to offer true unlimited data. New chief executive at Sprint Marcelo Claure is also puttin a lot of effort into improving the network, and we're curious to see whether the billion-dollar cash infusion by Japanese Softbank owner Masayoshi Son will finally put the Now Network on par with the rest. Simplicity, though? Sprint seems to really have it in contrast with all the little script you have to deal with on most other carriers. . That's the story of the latest ad by Sprint called 'All-in Wireless', where the carrier shows just how much simpler its offer is when compared to the counter-offers by T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon Wireless.

Bobby Shmurda's GF Allegedly Attempted to Smuggle Shank in Jail By

Image
Last week we reported that incarcerated artist Bobby Shmurda "recently punished for allegedly receiving a sharp metal object from another inmate" before he turned down a plea deal in court on June 25. Now it's being reported that the weapon he almost got away with smuggling into prison wasn't from another inmate, but from his 18-year-old girlfriend. 20-year-old Shmurda - real name Ackquille Pollard - was being visited by Kimberly Rousseau when a guard in the facility allegedly caught her pulling an object out of her bra and handing it to him. According to a criminal complaint, the shank was in a black latex glove balloon wrapped in black electrical tape. The couple were separately charged with "promoting prison contraband." Bobby Shmurda has been jailed with rapper Rowdy Rebel and other GS9 members since December 2014 on over 100 charges combined. Source: NYDailyNews

DeJ Loaf Allegedly Fought During BET Award Rehearsals

Image
According to recent reports out of L.A., several people got into altercations during BET Awards rehearsals this past weekend. Aside from Rich Homie Quan, we've learned that Detroit rapper DeJ Loaf and her brother got into a physical fight with two of her former managers. According to several sources, the two managers appeared at the Nokia Theatre in California on Saturday to talk with the "Me U & Hennessy" artist after she fired them both a few days prior. Apparently that's when things went left, with one of the managers ending up in the emergency room after fighting DeJ, her brother, and her new manager. The unidentified man who was admitted into the hospital reportedly cut his forehead during the run-in and had to get stitches. Source: HNHH|Twitter

LG Volt 2 and Tribute 2 with Android 5.1 Lollipop on board now available from Boost Mobile

Image
Two new LG smartphones are available in the US starting today, both sold by Boost Mobile, and both running Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box. The handsets are called LG Volt 2 and LG Tribute 2, obviously being successors to last year's LG Volt and LG Tribute. The LG Volt 2 is the most expensive among the two new devices, being offered by Boost for $149.99 (plus tax) off contract. The handset sports a 5-inch IPS display with 720 x 1280 pixels, it's powered by a quad-core 1.2 GHz processor, and has a 5 MP front-facing camera. Other features include LTE connectivity, an 8 MP rear camera, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of expandable internal memory, and a 2540 mAh battery. While the Tribute 2 shares some of its features with the Volt 2 (including LTE, a quad-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of expandable storage space), it's a smaller device, sporting a 4.5-inch IPS screen with 480 x 854 pixels. The Tribute 2 also has a smaller battery (1900 mAh), and a 5 MP rear camera paired with

Sprint's new $80 a month plan includes unlimited service and cost of equipment

Image
Tuesday morning, Sprint announced a new $80 monthly unlimited talk, text and data plan called "All-in." $60 of the monthly charge takes care of the talk, text and data, and the remaining $20 covers the cost to lease an Apple iPhone 6 or the Samsung Galaxy S6. The nation's third largest carrier, Sprint has managed to stave off a hard-charging T-Mobile, whose CEO has been focused on surpassing Sprint in the standings. Sprint's "All-in" plan debuts today and includes a one-time $36 activation fee. Sprint chief marketing officer Kevin Crull notes that "All-in" is exactly where the industry is heading. "The natural evolution of the industry is to advertise both combined," said Crull. "(Take the) cost of the device and the rate plan, put them together and tell the customer what's the rate all in."   Sprint has spent heavily with its current promotions, including one that cuts Verizon and AT&T customers' monthly bill in

Here's how Google checks for lag on your Android phone

Image
Yes, Google hates lag on smartphones as much as you do -- enough so that the search giant has a robot dedicated to spotting that delay between your finger input and what happens on screen. Meet the Chrome TouchBot, an OptoFidelity-made machine that gauges the touchscreen latency on Android and Chrome OS devices. As you can see in the clip below, the bot's artificial digit pokes, prods and swipes the display in a series of web-based tests (which you can try yourself) that help pinpoint problems in both code and hardware. This isn't the only gadget monitoring device lag at Google, but it could be the most important given how much the company's software revolves around touch. Don't be surprised if this automaton boosts the responsiveness of Mountain View's future platforms. Engadget

Diet-based 'video game' claims to make you thinner

Image
We know that Pavlovian conditioning can make you do all sorts of crazy things, so could it be used to make us all a bit healthier? Psychologists from the universities of Exeter and Cardiff believe that it's possible after building a "computer game" that, essentially, trains you to steer clear of bad food. Unfortunately, the game itself is just a flashcard routine where players are asked to push a button when they're shown salad and hold off when they see cookies. If we're honest, the bad guys in the food and drink industry still have the upper hand, just look at Cool Spot, the 1993 platformer that was a giant ad for 7 Up. The study asked 41 people to spend four, 10 minute sessions playing the game online while keeping a food diary. According to the results, participants wound up losing a "small but significant" amount of weight and laid-off for the bad stuff for the following six months. Meanwhile, a control group of 42 adults played the same game, but

Google Maps to include every US railroad crossing

Image
US Railway crossing accidents are up sharply over last year, but the Federal Railway Administration (FRA) is about to get some high-tech help. Google's Maps will soon include the locations of every public and private highway rail crossing location in the nation. The app will also give drivers navigating with Maps audio and visual alerts when they approach those spots. The FRA said that 270 people were killed in rail crossing accidents in 2015, 48 more than last year. They speculated that, ironically, the increase may be partly due to inattention caused by increased smartphone use on roads. That said, the FRA also told the New York Times that "there are many cases where drivers lack situational awareness, because it may be dark or the route is unfamiliar," particularly at uncontrolled crossings. In those cases, Google's app could snap drivers back to attention, provided they were using it to navigate. If not, the administration has also asked Apple, MapQuest, TomTom a

Sprint expands in-home sales and support to New York and L.A.

Image
Since not everybody loves going to a phone store, Sprint recently launched Direct 2 You to help you buy or update a handset from pretty much anywhere you want. It must have been on to something, as it just expanded it to four new cities: New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Denver. In addition, the service is now available to anybody, rather than just existing Sprint clients as before. Essentially, it lets you buy a new device, upgrade from an old one or get customer service from any location you want -- like your home or a ball field -- for free. The service is also in the carrier's home market of Kansas City and 28 other cities, including Chicago and Miami. It'll soon hit Detroit, Dallas and Washington, D.C., and by the end of the year, the carrier wants to blanket the US with around 5,000 roving support staff. If you're interested, you can call Sprint or visit a special website, then get them to come to your "home, office or coffee shop," according to the

Apple Music arrives June 30th at 11AM Eastern, Beats 1 an hour later

Image
Determined to try Apple Music and its accompanying Beats 1 radio the very moment they're available on June 30th? The streaming service's senior director, Ian Rogers, is happy to help those early adopter impulses. He says that iOS 8.4 (and thus Apple Music) will be available at 11AM Eastern on that day, and Beats 1 will go on the air one hour later. It's not clear what you'll hear if you tune in to the station right away, but the first slate of programming will include an interview with Eminem as well as appearances from everyone from Cara Delevigne to (unsurprisingly) Beats brand co-founder Dr. Dre. And no, Apple hasn't forgotten about iTunes Match and streaming the songs you already have. Eddy Cue notes that Apple Music will not only share the feature, but expand on it -- the company is aiming to match up to 100,000 songs in your library (versus today's 25,000) by the time iOS 9 shows up this fall. Unless you have a mind-numbingly huge music collection, you ca

Face tracking feature to come with the Windows 10 Mobile front-facing camera?

Image
According to a report published today, the latest version of the front-facing camera build for Windows 10 Mobile, 5.38.2004, comes with support for Face tracking. The feature recognizes when the camera is focused on a face, and keeps it inside a constant frame. This helps the subject stay in focus even when he or she is moving around. At the same time, the icon for the camera has been updated to make the camera app easier to discover. Phonearena

Tyrese Rants After Acting Chops Critiqued For Green Lantern Role

Image
Tyrese had a few words for critics who believe he isn't a strong enough actor to play the first black DC Comics superhero, Green Lantern. In an open letter to the editors of Forbes via his Instagram page, the actor went on to list his serious acting roles along with his franchised flicks, The Fast & The Furious and the Transformer series. Benjamin Moore, a contributor for Forbes' site wrote the op-ed, "Tyrese Gibson Should Not Be Warner Bros.' New Green Lantern" suggesting that Tyrese's charming persona wouldn't be a fit for the character John Stewart. Moore gives Tyrese credit for his successful franchise flicks, but states since his origins derive from singing, his range in the art is limited. He also said the character would turn comical or become a watered down version of Robert Downey Jr.'s take on John Stark in the Iron Man franchise. Tyrese informed critics in his Instagram rant that it was in fact fans who campaigned for him to play the

Harlem's Anti-LGBT Church Pastor Speaks On Infamous Signs

Image
Harlem's ATLAH Missionary Church isn't widely known for it's community efforts but for it's anti-LGBT and offensive signs outside of the church. Dr. James David Manning, the church's pastor has been vocal in the meaning of the signs and dismisses critics of the infamous marquee. Speaking out against protesters last month, Manning stated outcry about the signs has been unwanted since he isn't bothered when critics say inflammatory remarks to him. "You can put something up about me and and I would not be offended," he said. "I promise, I won't sit here and argue with you. If you put up something that says "I'm an ex-con,' I wouldn't be offended." He's also stood against the Supreme Court's decision to legalize marriages between LGBT couples. "The scotus has sealed the fate of sodomites to burn in hell. Demons now official US citizens," he posted on Facebook Friday. When it comes to the church's sig

Pre-paid carrier GoSmart Mobile adds $30 unlimited talk, text and data tier

Image
Starting today, $30 a month can buy you unlimited talk, text and data from GoSmart Mobile. The pre-paid carrier will give you 1GB of 3G data and once that is used up, your data speed is throttled to 2G except for one important connection. All of the tiers offered by GoSmart Mobile include 4G LTE access to Facebook. The cheapest tier cost $25 a month and includes unlimited talk and text plus the 4G LTE Facebook connection. The $35, $40 and $45 tiers all come with unlimited talk, text and data. The $35 plan gives you 2.5GB of 3G data before you are throttled to 2G speeds. The $40 and $45 plans come with 5GB and 10GB of 3G data respectively. Once that data is consumed, users are throttled to 2G speeds. GoSmart says "all monthly prices are as-advertised (without any hidden fees or auto-pay requirements), and come without any ridiculous strings attached." And if that sounds a lot like something T-Mobile would say, it turns out that GoSmart is a T-Mobile MVNO. That means that GoS

LG G4 Stylus to make its European debut in Greece next week

Image
Back in May, when the LG G4 Stylus was unveiled, we told you that the phone was a rebranded LG G Stylo, which is now available via Sprint and T-Mobile (and two of their pre-paid brands, Boost Mobile and MetroPCS, respectively). As the LG G4 Stylus, the handset is about to make its European debut in Greece. To reiterate the specs, the LG G4 Stylus features a 5.7-inch screen with a 720 x 1280 resolution. That works out to a pixel density of 258ppi. Powering the handset is the 64-bit Snapdragon 410 SoC, which brings to the party a quad-core 1.2GHz CPU and the Adreno 306 GPU. 1GB of RAM is inside with 16GB of native storage. Those requiring additional memory can use the 128GB capacity microSD slot that comes with the device. An 8MP camera resides on the back of the phone, while selfie fans can employ the 5MP snapper in front. The LG G4 Stylus is equipped with a 3000mAh battery, and is pre-installed with Android 5.0. The phone comes with a stylus, of course. The LG G4 Stylus is available

T-Mobile has the LG Leon LTE priced at $79.92 from tomorrow through the end of the month

Image
An internal document sent to T-Mobile stores reveals that the LG Leon LTE will be the subject of a short-lived deal starting tomorrow and running through the end of the month. That offer allows you to buy the handset for $79.92, a nice discount from the regular $149 price for the model. The LG Leon LTE features a 4.5-inch screen with a 480 x 854 resolution. That combination results in a 218ppi pixel density. The 64-bit Snapdragon 410 SoC is under the hood, containing a quad-core 1.2GHz CPU and the Adreno 306 GPU. 1GB of RAM is inside with 8GB of internal storage (3.7GB available to the user). A 32GB capacity microSD slot is available to those who require additional memory. The back and front camera combo weighs in at 5MP/.3MP and an 1820mAh battery keeps the lights on. Android 5.0 is pre-installed. In addition, T-Mobile's 2 for $100 and 4 for $100 promotional data plans were supposed to go bye-bye today. Another leaked memo shows that the carrier is extending the deals through Ju

Former Xbox head regrets not properly investigating an Xphone gaming phone back in 2004

Image
In a recent interview, former Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach sheds a lot of valuable insight on the history of Microsoft's Xbox project. Starting from the botched E3 launch of the original Xbox, on to the struggles of mending mistakes with the Xbox 360, Bach shares his personal experiences with leading the Xbox division. Although the entire interview is a good read for Xbox fans, what really caught our attention was the fact that the former Xbox chief mentions a cancelled project called the Xboy, a prototype handheld game console that Microsoft was experimenting with years before the original iPhone launched. According to Bach, the team failed to see that the Xboy could have become the Xphone. Bach says that the Xboy idea was repeatedly experimented with, but the management team turned down every version of the suggested business model. Apparently, this decision was made in order to maintain focus on "getting things right" with the Xbox, and avoiding a dilution of resou

Disney starts banning selfie sticks throughout its theme parks

Image
Love them or hate them, selfie sticks have quickly became smartphone accessories that many people are frequently carrying around. But using a selfie stick isn't always safe, that's why Disney is now starting to completely forbid these accessories on the premises of its theme parks. According to The Orlando Sentinel, Disney announced that, starting June 30, it would ban selfie sticks at the Disney World Resort in Florida, as well as at its water parks, DisneyQuest, and at the Disneyland Resort in California. Starting July 1, selfie sticks will also be banned from Disney's theme parks in Paris and Hong Kong. "Unfortunately, selfie sticks have become a growing safety concern for both our guests and cast," said Disney World spokeswoman Kim Prunty. Previously, Disney had banned selfie sticks only from rides and attractions, but not form other park areas. After the new policy takes effect, those who want to visit Disney's parks carrying selfie sticks will have to

Bloomberg: Apple iPhone 6S with Force Touch tech to enter volume production as early as next month

A recent report from Bloomberg suggests that Force Touch, the pressure sensing input technology that Apple debuted earlier this year on its MacBook lineup, will make an appearance on the 2015 iPhone models. Numerous previous rumors hinted at this possibility, but Bloomberg's report certainly lends further credibility to the notion. First implemented in the 2015 Apple Macbook, Force Touch is the brand name that Apple uses to describe a technology designed to recognize various pressure levels. Basically, the technology works very well to differentiate a tap from a touch. If this rumor turns out to be accurate, Force Touch will face a maturity test of sorts on the iPhone. On the limited screen real estate of the Apple Watch, the first device to integrate Force Touch under the display, the pressure sensor adds a new input dimension. On smartphones, however, it remains to be seen if the technology will work much better than the simple but effective long tap. Allegedly, Apple has been

Meizu MX5 poses for more pictures just days before unveiling

Image
With the Meizu MX5 expected to be unveiled on June 30th, some new pictures of the device have surfaced. The images once again confirm that the phone will feature a fingerprint scanner embedded in the oval button under the screen. The device will feature a 5.5-inch display with a 1080 x 1920 FHD resolution. That works out to a pixel density of 401ppi. Driving the device is the MediaTek MT-6795T SoC, which includes a true octa-core CPU and the PowerVR G6200 GPU. 3GB of RAM is inside along with 16GB of internal memory. A 20.7MP camera adorns the back of the MX5 and a 5MP snapper is found in front. With a 3150mAh battery powering the unit, Android 5.0.1 is pre-installed. Speaking of the battery, the mCharge technology allows you to charge the cell up to 25% after just 10 minutes. The Meizu MX5 could be priced at the equivalent of $290 USD. We should be able to fill in all of the gaps this coming Tuesday once Meizu takes the wraps off of the handset. Engadget

Windows 10 Mobile build 10149 features call recording?

Image
The latest build of Windows 10 Mobile, 10149, apparently shows a default folder called Recorded Calls inside the File Explorer app. The new folder is listed along with folders for Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Ringtones, and Videos. While Windows Phone 8.1 did not allow users to record both sides of a conversation, it appears that Windows 10 Mobile will offer this feature. In addition, a Voice Recorder app has been discovered that comes with permission to use the 'Recorded Calls' folder. It is another often requested feature that Microsoft is bringing to Windows 10 Mobile. The latest word we have is that the Windows 10 Mobile update will start rolling out in September. Around the same time, we should see new handsets come to market with Windows 10 Mobile pre-installed. The open nature of the Android OS makes it easier for third party developers to offer apps that record both sides of a call. In fact, last month we recommended five such Android apps that are free and

DMX Arrested For Failure To Pay Child Support In New York

Image
DMX was arrested just minutes before he was scheduled to perform at Radio City Music Hall for failed child support payments Friday evening, NY Daily News reports. The rapper arrived at the New York midtown venue before midnight. Concert goers of the "Masters of Ceremony" concert witnessed the rapper taken into police custody as soon as he stepped out his car. Witnesses who took to social media also claimed guns were drawn. Other performers at the concert included Ma$e , The Lox (minus Styles P) and Shabba Ranks. The rapper has a dozen children with several women. Over the years, he's been accused of ignoring child support payments. After a failed attempt to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy for his problems with child support, a judge ordered $15,000 a month from the rapper's wages at Universal Music Group would be taken and given to his ex wife and mother of his four children, Tashera Simmons. In the past, the rapper has been arrested for drug possession, animal cruelty

Memphitz Wanted For Robbing Car Wash Worker at Gunpoint

Image
Former record executive and reality star Mickey "Memphitz" Wright is a wanted man after he allegedly stole a phone from a car wash employee in Atlanta. According to WSBTV, the reality star came to the Club Corners Carwash for a cleaning on Thursday. Harold Huntley, an employee at the business says he got in the car to drive it through the wash. After cleaning the car, Memphiz approached him with claims that he stole marijuana from inside the Jeep. Huntley says he smelled the drug in the car, but didn't take anything. "He comes back and is like, 'You stole my weed, you stole my weed.' I was like, 'Nah, man,' and then he pulled a gun out on me and was like, 'It's gonna be your life or it's gonna be my weed,'" Huntley said. Video cameras caught the moment Memphitz tried to attack Huntley. He also took his phone before running away. "He was like, 'Man just give me the phone, give me the phone. What's it gonna be? Your

South Carolina Cop Fired For Flaunting Rebel Flag Boxers Online

Image
With moves to remove the Confederate Flag from retail stores and state landmarks, the North Charleston, South Carolina police force have fired an officer for posing in rebel flag underwear on Facebook. According to The Post & Courier, Shannon Dildine, a veteran of the force was given the pink slip for violating the county's laws. Police Chief Eddie Driggers handed him the letter on Wednesday stating the officer made him incapable of being a North Charleston officer. Driggers also called the arrest a prerequisite to avoid legal trouble. In the event Dildine were to arrest a minority, the photo would be more than likely used to show the cop's potential bias. Earlier this week, Gov. Nikki Haley called for the Confederate flag to be removed from the state house after Charleston gunman Dylann Roof was seen posing with it before he killed nine people in the Mother Emanuel Church. Dildine has ten days to appeal the firing. Check out a portion of the officer's termination le

Apple improves Apple Care+ battery coverage on the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch

Image
Apple Care+ is an extended warranty that adds two years of coverage to your Apple iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. It gives owners of the Apple Watch Edition smartwatch three years of extended coverage. Originally, Apple Care+ would replace any of the covered devices once the cell could no longer hold a charge of more than 50% of the original specifications. But Apple has quietly made a change that improves the value of the extended warranty. Now, Apple will cover a battery that cannot hold a charge greater than 80% of the part's original specs. That means instead of waiting for your battery to lose 50% of its capability, you are covered if it loses just 20% of its capacity. Apple says that it will fix the defect for free with new parts or parts that are equivalent to new in performance. Or if that can't be accomplished, it will replace the covered product for free with a new unit or one that is equivalent to new in performance.  "If during the Plan Term, you submit a vali

Microsoft Lumia 735 already discounted: now $29.99 at Verizon (on contract)

Image
Available at Verizon Wireless since last week, the Microsoft Lumia 735 is a Windows Phone handset that was previously released in other markets as the Nokia Lumia 735. Initially, Verizon offered the smartphone for $79.99 on contract, but it has now lowered the price to just $29.99, obviously wanting more customers to consider getting the device. However, the off contract price hasn't been lowered, so it's still $192. The Lumia 735 is a mid-range handset that sports a 4.7-inch display with 720 x 1280 pixels, and has a 5 MP front-facing camera for wide-angle selfies. The smartphone is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor (definitely not among the newest chipsets around), further featuring: a 6.7 MP Carl Zeiss rear camera, LTE connectivity, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of expandable storage space, and a 2200 mAh battery with wireless charging capabilities (charging pad sold separately). Currently running Windows Phone 8.1, the Lumia 735 will be updated to Windows 10 - possibly s

SiriusXM will pay $210 million to use songs recorded before 1972

Image
Before now, satellite radio company SiriusXM wasn't paying royalties on the catalog recorded before 1972 that it beamed to customers. Today, the company agreed to pay $210 million for those songs, compensating both independent and major record labels for using their material. The settlement comes after ABKCO Music & Records, Capitol Records, Sony Music Entertainment, UMG Recordings and Warner Music Group filed a lawsuit against SiriusXM in 2013. Under the terms of the agreement, the satellite radio service can "to reproduce, perform and broadcast" the library of tunes until Decemeber 31, 2017 without further payments. This means that tracks from the likes of the Rolling Stones, Gloria Gaynor and many more will be subject to agreements. Why weren't they protected before? Material recorded prior to February 15, 1972 wasn't subject to copyright, so streaming services and radio stations weren't required to pay licensing fees. While the SiriusXM deal is a big w

The Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is now officially available through AT&T for $249.99

Image
We heard a short while ago that the Lumia 640 XL would be making its way to AT&T on June 26th. Right on cue, the handset is now available to purchase, with the super-sized phablet available without a contract for the sum of $249.99 The major talking point of the Microsoft-branded device is its mammoth 5.7-inch display. It's a bit of a low-res affair, though, with a 720 x 1280 resolution equating to a rather underwhelming 259 pixels per inch. Confirming its status as a mid-range-at-best device, there's a quad-core Snapdragon 400 SoC under the hood, along with a lowly 1 GB of RAM. Then again, Windows Phone is known for running with general fluidity even when the hardware is scraping the barrel.  The 13-megapixel rear-facing camera should offer a decent performance, given that the Lumia name is underpinned by robust point-and-shoot technology, and there is a 5-megapixel offering on the front for those all-important selfies. There's only 8 GB of on-board storage to work w

Motorola's Moto 360 smartwatch drops down to just $149.99

Image
With several new entries to the smartwatch arena over the past couple of months, some of the market's older models are lowering their prices. Yesterday, we told of how the first-gen Asus ZenWatch had dropped its price below $150 for the first time, and now Motorola's Moto 360 has followed suit with a similar, albeit limited offer. It's worth adding that this isn't the first time that the 360 has fallen in price, but if you are in the market for a smartwatch running on Android Wear, you may want to take advantage of this limited-time offer. When we say limited, we certainly mean it. At the time of writing, the Moto 360 can be had over at Woot for $149.99, but it will expire in ten hours' time or when the stock has sold out completely – whichever comes first. Thus, you must move quickly if you want to snag a bargain, especially since it could be a while before this model is seen at such an enticing price again.  The Moto 360 includes a rounded, 1.56-inch 320 x 290 L

Tyga Gets Into Fight With Club Owner - Gun Reportedly Drawn

Image
This past week alone in hip-hop there have been numerous altercations and a string of arrests. Now, as we head into the weekend, there's been another report of a rapper losing his cool, and this time it's none other than Cali artist Tyga. According to recent reports, Tyga was scheduled to perform at club Envogue Genève in Switzerland for an hour. Instead, the "Fan of a Fan" rapper arrived late and only performed for close to ten minutes. After leaving Envogue with Kylie Jenner and his crew around 4 a.m., the club owner approached Tyga at his car and a fight ensued. According to an eyewitness someone in Tyga's camp pulled out a gun at one point and they exited the scene immediately after, ditching Tyga's bodyguards in the process. Stay tuned for more info. Tyrese Gibson Teases Possibility Of Suiting Up As Green Lantern

Image
On Wednesday, a new rumor claimed that Star Trek star Chris Pine is actually Hal Jordan and not Steve Trevor in the DC Cinematic Universe. Plus, multiple sites are claiming that there will be more than one Earth-bound Green Lantern in the DCCU. With the strong assumption being John Stewart is one of them. Now as you know, Furious 7 actor Tyrese Gibson has been lobbying for the role of John Stewart for months. On Wednesday, he teased his followers with another Green Lantern image, but this one had him paired up with Chris Pine. Woah!  "There are certain things I can't speak on," Tyrese replied when asked by Entertainment Tonight if that Instagram image was confirmation he's John Stewart. "But I will say, however this works out, it's definitely the fans' fault. I was at home minding my own business and fans start creating these fan-made videos of me as Green Lantern and I looked into it. I've been a fan of the Green Lantern. I took the oath, and I ha

All The Picks, Trades & Everything Else You Need To Know About Last Night’s NBA Draft

Image
The Timberwolves started things off, picking Karl Anthony Towns out of Kentucky with the first overall selection. The Lakers picked D’angelo Russell with the second pick which really set things off for the rest of the draft and caused a little chaos. He could be the next generation star for the Lakers after Kobe leaves so it was definitely surprising but a great pick. The fact they picked a guard when they need help down low could also be a sign they are confident they will land DeMarcus Cousins from the Kings. After that the 76ers took Jahlil Okafor from Duke, which by then, many Knicks fans were hoping he would fall to number four. As you already know, the Knicks took a gamble and drafted Kristaps Porzingis from Latvia. The crowd at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn voiced their disapproval, but there is a chance he becomes great. Rounding out the top five picks, the Orlando Magic selected another European player, Mario Hezonja. To finish off the top ten, the Kings picked Willie Caule

The Sony Xperia Z3+ comes with a display protector out of the box

Image
A recent discovery shows that the Sony Xperia Z3+ is shipping with a pre-applied screen protector.  This is not entirely new behaviour from Sony, as the manufacturer has a long history of shipping flagship devices with pre-applied anti-shatter films. After ditching the practice last year with the Xperia Z2 and the Xperia Z2 Tablet, Sony now seems to be back to its old habits. Unfortunately, it looks like the screen protector that the Xperia Z3+ comes with out of the box is not the best solution for protecting the screen of the device, as some recent tests reveal that the screen protector does not come with oleophobic coating. The lack of such a coating means that the protection film is a bit of a smudge magnet. Furthermore, reports also show that the screen protector's fit isn't optimal either. On the bright side, the pre-applied screen protection can be easily removed and replaced with a solution of the user's choosing, which is an improvement over the anti-shatter prot

'Batman: Arkham Knight' for PCs pulled because of glitches

Image
If you've been holding off from buying Batman: Arkham Knight for Windows due to reports of numerous performance issues, low quality textures and glitches, its publisher Warner Brother Games agrees. That's why it's pulling the game from sale "while we work to address these issues to satisfy our quality standards." If you've already purchased it you can still play, but in a forum post the team mentioned people can go to Steam or retail locations where they purchased the game for a refund. A couple of days ago, Warner made some suggestions on how users could get the game to run better, but those don't seem to help much. Right now, the game is showing a "Mostly Negative" review status on Steam with 8,700 reviews logged -- while it's certainly not the first bad PC port, hopefully this embarrassing episode will make it one of the last. Google could build a hoverboard, but won't

Image
Buried deep in the bowels of Google's top-secret X lab is the technology that could, theoretically, enable us to all have a Back to the Future-style hoverboard. Unfortunately, according to the lab's director of moonshots, that's where it's going to stay, disappointing all of the bullied nerds of Hill Valley. Obi Felten revealed at the Hello Tomorrow conference in Paris that researchers had successfully developed a method to "levitate carbon on magnets," but that it struggled to see that too many people would actually want such a device. Yeah, we know. Felten was talking about how the X lab rapidly develops a technology and then works out if it has a purpose. If not, then it's taken to a large trash can entitled "technologies in search of a use case" and dumped until we really need it -- like in the event of an alien invasion. In the case of the hoverboard, Felten and co. simply couldn't see much of a market for the hardware beyond the "

Yahoo's trying to trick you into switching search engines

Image
Thinking about how much you'd like to try Yahoo's search engine instead of Google or even Bing? Us neither, but you may end up with it anyway if you're not careful during your next Java update. CEO Marissa Meyer told shareholders yesterday that Yahoo has teamed with Oracle on a new partnership aimed at getting users to take its search for a spin. If you're guessing that means it's "tricking careless users into changing default search engines via a pre-ticked installation box," then ding! That's Oracle's go-to method for installing notorious crapware like the Ask.com toolbar in exchange for, we imagine, considerable sums of money. Yahoo said that "we have definitely made sure that our onboarding process is one that is highly transparent and gives users choice," according to the WSJ. Translated, that means "we're technically asking permission," but forcing users to opt out is still a highly dubious practice. Of course, Google

Apple yanks games with Confederate flags from the App Store (update)

Image
Following the lead of other major retailers like Walmart, Amazon, Etsy and eBay in removing products featuring the Confederate flag, Apple has reportedly begun removing apps that feature the Stars and Bars from its online store. The apps most affected are, unsurprisingly, Civil War games like Ultimate General: Gettysburg and Civil War. Update: In a statement to TechCrunch, Apple said it is only removing software that uses the Confederate flag in offensive or mean-spirited ways, which violate the existing guidelines. The company says it is working with any developers of educational or historical apps that were removed to get them back in the App Store. Ultimate General's developer confirmed via tweet that it's app had been pulled from the App Store for that reason: As Polygon points out, basically any depiction of the Confederate flag (even in its proper historical context) appears to be enough for Apple to nix an offending app. What's more, Google looks to have taken sim

Upgrade your phone up to three times a year with T-Mobile's JUMP! on Demand

Image
Starting this Sunday, T-Mobile will launch JUMP! on Demand. This "Amped up" version of JUMP! allows the carrier's subscribers to upgrade to a new phone up to three times a year. With JUMP! on Demand, users no longer pay the extra $10 per month to join. What they do pay is one monthly price that covers the cost of their phone and the program. As an example, starting this Sunday T-Mobile will offer the Apple iPhone 6 with JUMP! on Demand for $15 a month (you will have to trade-in your current phone, of course). The beauty of JUMP! on Demand is that when you see that shiny new smartphone beckoning to you from inside a T-Mobile store, you can ask for the phone and the rep will hand it to you. You don't even pay sales tax. It's all part of what T-Mobile calls Uncarrier Amped. T-Mobile says that 47% of smartphone totin' Americans want to upgrade their phone more often. Consider that JUMP! on Demand will allow T-Mobile subscribers to upgrade up to six times over tw

T-Mobile quantifies which unlimited 4G LTE customers are in risk of getting throttled

Image
T-Mobile has recently cleared up its policy toward the throttling of its unlimited 4G LTE subscribers. Those who use more than 21GB of data in a billing month can find their browsing speed throttled to as low as 1Mbps in situations where network traffic is congested. Previously, T-Mobile said that it would throttle the top 3% of unlimited 4G LTE data users when its pipeline was crowded. But the truth is that T-Mobile hasn't changed its policy at all. It merely has quantified the amount of data use that would put customers in danger of being throttled. It is a lot easier to monitor how much data you've used in a month than it is to figure out if you are in the top 3% of the carrier's data users. As T-Mobile says, this threshold changes every quarter. For this quarter, usage of more than 21GB of data puts you in the top 3% of the operator's data users. "On the rare occasion when a T-Mobile cell site is congested, the top 3% of our data users could see their data pr
