Scans Show Aaron Hernandez Had Severe CTE, Fiancee to Sue Patriots

Fiancee of the late Aaron Hernandez, Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez, has filed a lawsuit against the NFL on behalf of their 4-year-old daughter Avielle Janelle. The lawsuit comes in light of results from a study of his brain that informed Hernandez's estate that he was suffering from a severe case of CTE at the time of his suicide. Jenkins-Hernandez is claiming that Hernandez was stricken with CTE during his three-year career with the New England Patriots and that the league is responsible for having exposed him to the threat of the neurodegenerative brain disorder.
"The NFL had made certain representations to players during this time that Aaron was playing (2010 to 2012) and those representations turned out to be false," attorney for Hernandez's estate, Jose Baez said while announcing the $20 million suit. Baez's statement reinforces the claim made by Jenkins-Hernandez in a paragraph from the document that asserts that league officials "were fully aware of the damage that could be inflicted from repetitive impact injuries and failed to disclose, treat or protect him from the dangers of such damage." In young Avielle Janelle's name, the lawsuit poses to seek "redress for the loss of parental consortium she has experienced based on the negligent conduct of Defendants that deprived her of the companionship and society of her father, Aaron Hernandez."
Hernandez's death was highly controversial, considering it followed his emotional victory in a double homicide case that Baez was credited for beating. Soon after, Baez would tell the press that he was eager to get a retrial in the case involving the slaying of Odin Lloyd, that Hernandez was already serving a life sentence for. But it was not to be, as he was found hanged in his prison cell on April 19.
Suicidal behavior falls in accordance with the symptoms of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, of which the Boston University CTE Center established he suffered a Stage 3 diagnosis.
