Leonardo Da Vinci's long-lost "Salvator Mundi" ("Savior of the World") sold at Christie's Auction in New York for a record-breaking amount. The picture represents Jesus holding an orb in his hand symbolizing the Earth and is one of the last surviving pieces of Da Vinci's work. The piece was originally lost from the collection of King Charles I of England in 1736 and was purchased by Britain's Charles Robinson in 1900 after which point the piece was no longer attributed to Da Vinci according to the auction house. "Salvator Mundi" changed hands over and over until New York art collector Robert Simon discovered it in Louisiana back in 2005.
The painting Christie's dubbed "The Last Da Vinci" was recently authenticated after years of research and restoration began in 2007. The expected selling price coming into the auction was $100 million before being sold for a staggering $450.3 million.
