Legendary rapper Nas has always shown exceptional skill in combining Hip Hop and social commentary, as well as stressing the importance of education. In a huge step for Hip Hop, the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard University recently announced their Nasir Jones Hip Hop Fellowship. According to the statement released, the fellowship will aid exceptional Hip Hop artists also interested in learning.
The statement reads, "The Fellowship will provide selected scholars and artists with an opportunity to show that "education is real power," as it builds upon the achievements of those who demonstrate exceptional capacity for productive scholarship and exceptional creative ability in the arts, in connection with Hip Hop."
They added that Nas' work has "helped usher in an original form of hip-hop debate and analysis that reflects on and represents urban youth angst and conflict as well as intelligence, confidence, and ambition."
This isn't the first time Harvard has honored Hip Hop either. In 2012, producer 9th Wonder spent a year at Harvard working on an academic project called "These Are The Breaks."
