With details in the death of unarmed, 18-year-old Michael Brown at the hands of St. Louis police officers continuing to come to light, the LAPD is now coming under scrutiny for their role in the death of an unarmed, 24-year-old black man in South Los Angeles this week.
KTLA reports that Ezell Ford was killed Monday night after an incident with Los Angeles police. Varying accounts of the incident abound with the LAPD stating that during a routine stop "a struggle ensued" resulting in an "officer-involved shooting".
Ford's mother, Tritobia Ford, says her son was complying with police and lying on the ground when he was shot multiple times. A man who identified himself as Ford's cousin told KTLA that local police knew of Ford's "mental problems" and "complications" and that when Ford's mother approached police for info after the shooting, they waved her off with their batons.
Police Chief Charlie Beck, the LAPD Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners, will likely review the incident, the LAPD told KTLA.
A candlelight vigil was held for Ezell Ford on Tuesday evening.
