Detroit Police: Son fatally stabs mother

Police are on the scene investigating the death of a woman on Detroit's east side. Police say Sandy Lewis was stabbed by her 24-year-old son.

Detroit Police Captain Rodney Cox says the father received a call from the son last night, in which the son said he had just killed his mother. The father rushed over to the home and found the son still inside and the mother unresponsive on the kitchen floor, Cox says. The father does not share the same residence as the mother and the son.

The police were called and they responded to the scene around 4:30 a.m. Thursday and took the son into custody.

We're told the son needed to receive medical attention as he had a cut on one of his hands, indicating the mother may have fought back. Police say other evidence also shows signs of a possible struggle between the two.

A friend of the victim tells Fox 2's Maurielle Lue she received a text message from the victim around midnight, saying she needed help because her son was depressed again. The friend did not want to go on camera or identify herself.

Authorities were at the home much of Thursday morning, which is in the 19600 block of Algonac. The neighborhood is near the intersection of Hoover Street and E. State Fair Avenue.

This is the second time this week a woman was killed allegedly by her son. The first instancehappened Tuesday night on Casmere Street.
