As Nicki Minaj prepares to host the MTV European Music Awards, her fans are in arms over her lyric video to "Only" featuring Drake, Chris Brown and Lil Wayne.
The video, which launched on Friday has been met with mixed reviews and claims that the rapper used WWII propaganda visuals and other Nazi imagery. The lyric video opens up with cartoon versions of the artists. Nicki serves as a leader walking past her soldiers who have "YM" bands on their arms, similar to Nazi uniforms with swastika armbands. Chris Brown, Drake and Lil Wayne are illustrated as a general, a priest and a businessman.
Fans questioned the theme of the video immediately in the comments section and on Twitter. Some comments have been harsh while others question Drake because of his Jewish roots.
Nicki has been slammed in the past for offensive images when she used the iconic photo of Malcolm X from 1964 as cover art for the single, "Lookin A** N****." Minaj fixed the cover art after Malcolm X's daughter Ilyasah Shabazzcalled her "disrespectful."
Some fans stood up for Nicki and explained that the "Only" lyric video is heavily themed around the fact the Young Money artists are looked at as a strong army.
The video's creator, Jeff Osborne, retweeted fans on the backlash to the video. When asked his thoughts on the matter, the director replied, "Specifically some folks are less certain than others that the imagery is specifically intended to reference Nazi iconography."
