Homeless squatter found murdered on Detroit's west side

A young man's body was found in the snow on Detroit's west side.

"I heard about 10 gun shots, that's what woke me out of my sleep," said Dashawn Ruffin.

And when Ruffin walked around the corner down Montrose Street, he realized those bullets killed his friend 24-year-old Alvin Smith.

Friends suspect Smith, who has been homeless, may have been robbed. His pockets pulled out where he was laying in the middle of the driveway. His other items left on the snow.

But they are asking the question - why would you rob and kill someone who had nothing  to begin with.

Smith was laying toward the back of the house on a pile of  the snow. His face so bloody he says he barely recognized him.

"It's horrible you live in the city,  there's so much violence crime going on," Smith said. "There is so much going on, It's crazy."

"He don't have anything," said Bruce Robinson, who grew up with Alvin. said. "You see him staying in a vacant house. Cool cat, didn't mess with anybody."

Detroit police know very little about Smith at this point. They suspect robbery but continue to investigate. Detectives believe he was shot - but are waiting for the autopsy for an official cause of death.

Friends who went to school with Smith say he recently started squatting inside a home, trying to stay warm. Everything he had was inside one room. Bruce Robinson says he just gave Smith a heater yesterday.

No one knows who would want to take his life or why.

"If you know him, he didn't beef with anybody, didn't mess with anybody," Robinson said.

"He's never in any sort of trouble," Ruffin said. "That's why it shocked me to hear about him."
