Will Smith Not Likely to Be in 'Independence Day' Sequel

Independence Day is returning to the theater without Captain Steven Hiller, Deadline reports. 20th Century Fox has been given the green light to begin production on the sequel to one of Will Smith's biggest blockbuster films.

While the actor won't be in the sequel, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are expected to make cameos in the film. As for a lead, rumors have circled around Fruitvale Station's Michael B. Jordan for over a year. Critics believe if the actor shows interest in the film, a part will more than likely be offered to him. A script has been completed for the film and a release date for June 26, 2016. The original film was released July 2, 1996 and grossed over $800 million worldwide.

The news comes just a month after it was announced another 90's hit film Rush Hour would be made into a television series. Like Smith, the film's stars Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan will not be a part of the TV sequel.
