DETROIT -
A 21-year-old Detroit man has been charged in connection with two rape cases, including one that happened seven years ago.
Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy on Tuesday said Michael Sykes is accused of assaulting and robbing two women -- aged 25 and 26 -- during a March 2008 incident in an alley at Wisconsin and Cortland streets. He's facing two counts of kidnapping, six counts of criminal sexual conduct and two counts of unarmed robbery for that incident.
Sykes is also accused of kidnapping and assaulting three women -- aged 19, 20, and 21 -- on March 29 of this year near Fenkell Avenue and Schaefer Highway. For that incident, he is charged with three counts of kidnapping, nine counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, two counts of armed robbery, three counts of felonious assault and felony firearm.
Sykes' neighbors are in shock.
"I am still alarmed this man was this close to me. Still nervous, it's scary," said Phyma Perkins.
"For somebody to be that close is very scary, very scary," said Angie Jackson.
Sykes is also charged with the kidnapping, robbery and rape of two women in a west side alley that happened in 2008 -- when Sykes was 14 years old.
"He needs to be locked up. He needs to be behind bars for the rest of his life," said neighbor Bruce Ray.
Sykes is scheduled to be arraigned Wedneday in 36th District Court.
