Life sentence for Detroit mom who pleaded guilty to killing 2 kids found in freezer

A Detroit woman who killed two of her four children and stored their bodies in a home freeze will spend the rest of her life in prison.

Mitchelle Blair killed her 13-year-old daughter, Stoni, in 2013 and her 9-year-old son, Stephen, in 2012. She claims they had sexually abused a sibling, though she didn't witness the alleged assaults and never reported anything to police. Prosecutor Carin Goldfarb said there was no evidence of sexual assault.

Blair spent several minutes criticizing the fathers of the children who didn't have much of a role in their lives.

“As horrendous as everyone thinks I am, that’s fine, but I’m the only one that’s not lying about anything,” Blair said.

Blair told the that court she poured scalding water on the victims, beat them with sticks and put trash bags over their heads.

An eviction crew discovered the bodies in the freezer in March.

"As a mother, one of your primary responsibilities was to protect your kids," the judge said. "And in that respect, you failed in the worst possible way. ... Thankfully, that house of horrors that you created is no longer in existence."

Hathaway formally sentenced Blair Friday, about three weeks after Blair pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. Her no-parole sentence is mandatory. She has said that she would be willing to be sentenced to death, but Michigan doesn't have the death penalty.

"They will never know the joy of what could have been in their life without you in it. They lived in terrible fear of you, and I find that just so sad in this case," Hathaway said. "After all is said and done, you imposed the death penalty on your children."
