Seven prison workers were charged in the escape of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman on Friday, CNN reports.
Mexico's attorney general Jesus Murillo didn't announce their names but stated they were being questioned and the charges would be announced soon. The prison workers allegedly helped the infamous drug lord make his second prison escape through a hole in his shower.
Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong also spoke at the news conference and said over 45 workers were questioned after it took 18 minutes for officers to notice El Chapo escaped. "That is part of what the attorney general's office is looking at -- if the protocols were fulfilled in the correct times," Osorio Chong said. Under Osorio Chong, the prison director and a few officials have been fired.
Mexican journalists and critics don't have much faith in the Mexican government after founding out El Chapo was viewed as a worshiped figure in prison. During his time at the maximum security prison, he conducted a hunger strike with 800 other prisoners.
This week, Mexican authorities announced a $3.8 million reward for information about El Chapo and his whereabouts. Rumored reports claim El Chapo is offering $10 million to any U.S. citizen that wants to help him seek refuge in the states.
