Geno Smith’s surgery on his jaw appears to have went fine as he was seen outside his home throwing the football around with a friend. Based on reports, he doesn’t have too many friends inside the Jets locker room since being punched by his now former teammate and current member of the Buffalo Bills, Ik Enemkpali.
Physically Geno looks fine, although you can clearly see the swelling of his jaw. He was throwing the ball around and even seemed in good spirits, telling the New York Post “I feel great. You see me throwin’, right?”, his speech slightly slurred by the swelling.
Mentally however he still has a lot to face. Because of the injury he has at least temporarily lost his starting job to Ryan Fitzpatrick but if the Jets play well with Fitz, Geno could be watching from the sidelines even after his jaw heals.
He also needs to fix the way other guys in the locker room view him. There have been too many reports from guys saying he deserved to get punched in the face and numerous players don’t seem to respect him. Getting respect from your teammates is of utmost importance in the NFL, much more than any other sport. Geno doesn’t seem to have that so he will need to get it before he gets his job back.
But it remains to be seen whether his teammates even want him back. While keeping virtually silent about their signal caller, they have been phoning IK Enemkpali, the linebacker who punched him, in droves. “They called to see how I’m doing and called to check on me,” said Enemkpali, who was cut from Gang Green after Tuesday’s tussle.
Smith’s jaw was not wired shut — surgeons implanted metal plates and screws — but it might as well have been Saturday when it came to answering questions about the fisticuffs.
“No comment,” Smith said.
When the reporter persisted with questions about the fight, Geno threatened to call police because he was on private property. Clearly, we will never hear Geno’s side of the fight and maybe it’s because he really did deserve it.
