It's official! Next-generation Apple iPhones to be unveiled September 9th

Perhaps after weeks of hearing speculation thatApple will unveil its next-generation iPhones on September 9th, today's news is anti-climatic. Still,  Apple has just made the September 9th date official by sending out invitations to the event, which will be held in San Francisco. The new iPhone models, presumably named the Apple iPhone 6s and Apple iPhone 6s Plus, will be unveiled to the public exactly one year to the day that the current models were introduced.

The new iPhones are expected to be constructed with Series 7000 aluminum. This material, used on aircraft, is being employed by Apple to prevent the bending that marred the release of the iPhone 6 Plus last year. We also should see the new handsets offer Force Touch. This feature, already found on the Apple Watch, allows the display to differentiate between a regular tap and a harder tap. Apple also is expected to double the amount of RAM to 2GB, bump the rear camera to 12MP from the current 8MP, and include a larger capacity battery on the two new "6s" models.

We also could see the company unveil a 4-inch plastic-clad Apple iPhone 6c (which would be released in November), and there is talk that Apple will also unveil its new line of iPads, including the long-rumored 12.9-inch Apple iPad Pro.

In the days ahead, we could see more leaks, news and rumors related to the devices that Apple will unwrap on September 9th.
