Mavs Reportedly Signing Dirk to 2-Year $10 Million After Declining $25 M Option

It looks like Dirk Nowitzki will continue to ride with the franchise he began his NBA career with, as sources confirm that the Mavericks are finalizing a deal that will bring him back to Dallas for a 20th season. Dirk can be cited as telling AP's Schuyler Dixon that he just couldn't see himself in a different uniform and would bear down and do whatever is necessary to stay the course should the front office decide to continue it's rebuilding process. As a result, Dirk will accept less than half of what he could have potentially made heading into the 2017-18 season.
The Mavericks declined the $25 million option Nowitzki had written into his last contract, making him an unrestricted free agent in late June. But despite their unwillingness to put big dollars up for the future Hall of Famer, the buzz around the organization was that they wouldn't have wanted to see him go. Thus Nowitzki gracefully bends with the signing, as he will reportedly agree to a two-year contract valued at $10 million. The Mavs ensure they keep a team option as part of the second year of the deal.
While Nowitzki's 2017 scoring average (14.2) declined to the lowest its been since his rookie season, as have his minutes per game, he continues to make a solid contribution as a double threat on the boards and from behind the arc, in his limited role. His experience and presence will also serve him well in his role as a mentor to Dallas' young players while continuing to present a bit of legacy for fans to enjoy through the tough rebuilding process.
