Last October, Stephen Paddock opened fire on a crowd of Vegas concert-goers and slaughtered 58 people from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel. The massacre was the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history. Paddock was found dead in his hotel room from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, leaving the world at a loss for his motives. He left several families shattered and broken, but there is a little hope for those mourning the loss of their loved ones.
A $31.5 million victims’ fund that started as a GoFundMe page announced that they will be paying $275,000 each to the families of the deceased victims. $275,000 will also be paid to 10 other victims who either suffered permanent brain damage or were paralyzed during the attack.
The nonprofit Las Vegas Victims Fund shared a chart that proposes payments on a scale to 532 people. More than $10 million will be divided amongst 147 people who were hospitalized.
According to the New York Post, payments were determined by a committee of victim advocates, mental health and medical professionals, lawyers, donors and many others. Two Town Hall meetings were held to hear from victims and their families. The Las Vegas Victims Fund spokesman Howard Stutz stated that the organization plans to pay 100 percent of the funds raised starting on Monday.
