Remeber when Steve Francis was the man? He was drafted second overall in 1999 and earned the status of Rookie of the Year. The 3x NBA All-Star was poised for great success, but his battle with alcoholism killed his career. A decade after he left the NBA, Francis is still struggling with his demons.
Francis was arrested for public intoxication in Burbank, California, on Sunday night. Police responded to a call that stated a drunk customer in a hotel bar was making a scene. Burbank police stated that when they arrived, the former NBA star "was under the influence to an extent that he posed a risk to his own safety and the safety of others. " Francis was taken to jail but was released early Monday morning after being given a citation.
Francis penned an open letter about his struggle with alcohol abuse in The Players' Tribune just a week before being arrested. In the article, Francis writes,
"What happened to Steve Francis? I was drinking heavily, is what happened. And that can be just as bad. In the span of a few years I lost basketball, I lost my whole identity, and I lost my stepfather, who committed suicide.
I just let go, man."
