A Houston man, Paul Nixon, was charged after authorities discovered he had divorced his wife without her knowledge or consent. Nixon allegedly forged his wife’s signature on court documents and even falsified notary information in order to push the divorce through. The fraudulent paperwork included a waiver of service with a fake phone number and address for his wife, making it appear as though she had been properly notified.
The divorce went through as uncontested, since the court was led to believe that Nixon’s wife had agreed. However, when his wife later learned what had happened, she quickly filed a motion to have the divorce vacated. The court granted her request, officially voiding the fraudulent divorce.
Nixon was subsequently charged with aggravated perjury for lying under oath and forging official records. The case drew widespread attention as an unusual example of spousal deception, highlighting the ways court systems can be manipulated through falsified documents when safeguards fail
