You Need To Make A Reported $180,000 A Year To Live 'comfortably In New York City

A GoBankingRates analysis found that a single adult now needs about $184,420 a year to live comfortably in New York City. With essentials like $3,800 for rent, $500 for groceries, and $400 for healthcare each month totaling roughly $79,200 annually, that’s already close to half of the needed income. To keep basic costs under 50% and still have room for savings or the occasional coffee without stress, you’re looking at salaries above $180,000. It’s hardly surprising—NYC’s cost of living sits 238% higher than the U.S. average, with rents up 10% year over year and heavy taxes compounding the pressure. Compared to 2024’s $138,570 estimate, expenses have surged nearly 30%. While some manage with roommates or smaller Bronx apartments, nearly half of city households earning under $100,000 are struggling to stay afloat.
