A 36-year-old man from Minnesota named Mark Anderson was arrested at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, after he showed up claiming to be an FBI agent and saying he had a judge’s order to release Luigi Mangione, who is being held pending trial for the alleged killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. When officers asked for his credentials, Anderson produced only a Minnesota driver’s license and threw a stack of documents at them, none of which were legitimate federal paperwork.
During a search of his bag, officials found a barbecue fork and a pizza cutter-like blade instead of real weapons or official identification. Anderson was charged with impersonating a federal agent and is expected to appear in federal court. Mangione remains in custody and is due back in court soon as prosecutors continue preparations for his state and federal murder trials.
