The Trump administration has officially ended the decade-long effort to place Harriet Tubman on the U.S. $20 bill, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said the department is “not at present” moving forward with the redesign. The proposal was first announced in 2016 under President Barack Obama, with plans for Tubman to replace President Andrew Jackson on the front of the $20 bill in recognition of her legacy as an abolitionist and conductor on the Underground Railroad. The redesign was originally expected to debut in 2020 but faced repeated delays over the years.
