Will Smith Banned From Oscars for 10 Years for Slapping Chris Rock
Will Smith has reportedly been banned from attending any Academy events for the next ten years.
The Academy’s Board of Governors met this past Friday to discuss how to approach the situation, which found Will Smith slapping Chris Rock center stage during the Oscars live broadcast. The slap was reportedly a response from Smith that stemmed from a joke Rock made about Jada Pinkett-Smith.
In a letter addressing the matter, Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson said, “for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.” They expressed gratitude to the hosts of the Oscars—Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes, Chris Rock, and Amy Schumer, and then addressed Smith’s actions.
“This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith's behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests and restoring trust in the Academy. We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted,” said the Academy. Smith issued a statement via a rep, saying, “I accept and respect the Academy's decision.” Stay tuned for more updates.
