Teacher Only Gets 30 Days in Jail for Seducing 14-Year-Old
The latest controversy within the United States legal system involves the case of former teacher Stacey Dean Rambold. Rambold, who was 49 when the crimes regarding the case against him began, was sentenced officially to only 30 days in jail.
Back in 2008, Rambold was a teacher at Billings Senior High School when he began to have an intimate relationship with a 14-year-old student. He wound up having intercourse with the young girl and the school eventually found out. He resigned from his position and was charged with three counts of sexual intercourse without consent. Tragically, the girl wound up committing suicide three years later just weeks shy of her 17th birthday. It's believed that the legal proceedings, large amounts of grief, emotional distress, and embarrassment caused from the trauma of sleeping with Rambold led to her suicide.
Rambold was initially sentenced to 15-years in prison, but the judge G. Todd Baugh, ended up suspending all of his sentence but 31 days according to the Yellowstone County District Court. Rambold was also credited with having already served one day in jail so he has just 30 left to go.
The student's mother, Auliea Hanlon, was outraged by the verdict.
"I think this sentence is a joke, a travesty. People will lose faith in our justice system. I have."
Judge Baugh claimed that the victim "seemed older than her chronological age" and that she was "as much in control of the situation" as Rambold.
