Michigan Agrees to Spend $87 Million to Replace Flint's Poisonous Lead Pipes

The State of Michigan has allotted $87 million of federal and state funds to replace thousands of contaminated lead pipes throughout Flint, whose residents have been exposed to lead-tainted water for more than a year.

The proposal, if approved, would settle a lawsuit brought by Flint residents against the city. It would also require the state to provide free bottled water and begin a program of water testing. The deal aims to replace thousands of pipes in and around Flint homes by the year 2020.

A federal judge is expected to review the proposal on Tuesday.
