Two Children Shot and Wounded at a Chicago Playground
A year-end function held by a grade school on Chicago's South Side ended in tragic on Friday, June 16, with the bloodshed of two children leading to the arrest of two teenagers.
Shots went off at around 1:40 p.m. after a group of former Joseph Warren Elementary School students were denied entry into a picnic being held in the school's playground. They were said to have walked away from security guards at the park's entrance 10 minutes earlier, only to return to the 9200 block of S. Jeffery Ave. playground in a black vehicle from which three suspects exited and began firing.
A 7-year-old named Jayla Wright and 13-year-old DaKayla Hart were hit by stray bullets and brought to Comer Children’s Hospital where they were declared to be in stable condition. Police later apprehended 18-year-old Raekwon Hudson, a 17-year-old male and a 16-year-old male they believe were responsible for the shooting. Each suspect has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor criminal trespass to vehicles.
