Champion Basketball League Sues Ice Cube's BIG3 for Poaching Players
According to the $250 million suit, Cube began hanging around CBL executives and players prior to the league's 2014 launch. The rapper/actor had gotten so close with George, he claims, that the two discussed Cube and his partner, Jeff Kwatinetz collaborating to have their leagues work in tandem when George learned that he was starting the BIG3. What George apparently didn't see coming, was that some of his players were being recruited to cross over at the start of the BIG3, according to the suit.
George says that what really rubbed him as a violation of trust was how Cube began having his guys sign exclusive contracts, which thereby forbade them from alternating between leagues. The CBL lost more than 20 stars to the BIG3, he claims. "When certain players expressed their desire to participate in the CBL games, Mr. Cube confronted the players personally about playing in the CBL and threatened the players that they would be fined, not allowed to participate in the 52% of revenues bonus pool, or replaced on their teams. These threats were also shared with the CBL,” the suit reads.
