Coming To America" Sequel Confirmed After 30 Years

Eddie Murphy is on the verge of making the kind of comeback fans of the 56-year-old comedian can appreciate. Following a year of developments on his return via a fourth installation of the Beverly Hills Cop series, word got around that a sequel to Coming To America might be in the works. The rumor was actually started when in March, Murphy himself, tweeted an image of actress Vanessa Bell Calloway that bore a caption reading, "Coming to America sequel?" This week the imminence of a part-two to the 80's classic received a confirmation with the naming of the film's director and screenwriter.
Black-ish creator and Girls Trip co-writer Kenya Barris has been tapped to rewrite the script and Jonathan Levine of The Wackness, 50/50, and The Night Before will direct the Kevin Misher production. They replace original writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, original director John Landis and producers of the 1988 original, George Folsey, Jr. and Robert D. Wachs. There has been no word yet on whether actors Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley or John Amos will be returning for the sequel.
No date has been established for the beginning of the film's production or its expected release.
