Amazon fullfillment center opens in Livonia creating 1,000 jobs

LIVONIA, Mich. (WJBK) - Amazon is celebrating the grand opening of its 1 million square foot fulfillment center in Livonia.  

On Friday, Governor Rick Snyder and Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley toured the first facility of its kind in Michigan that will created more than 1,000 full-time jobs with full benefits.

"Good to see Michigan being selected because we've created a good business climate," Snyder said.

Despite Detroit, losing its bid on Amazon's second headquarters, Snyder and others are not viewing that as a failure but, a good learning experience. Amazon is still creating 3,500 jobs across the state.

"We've gotten a lot of projects, this is one Amazon. We have another Amazon in Romulus. We have other things that are growing," said Wayne County Executive Warren Evans.

Snyder and Calley stressed the benefits of Amazon Marketplace, helping local entrepreneurs expand their businesses.

"There are literally thousands of entrepreneurs that are selling through this system and more being added every day," Calley said.

Taking a look at the day-to-day operations, many appeared impressed - not only with the technology, but the efficiency. To top off the day, students at Livonia's Frost Middle School were given $10,000 for technology and educational items for 600 kids.

Snyder left the facility even more optimistic, telling Michiganders to be even louder and prouder.

"We are back and we are one of the best places in the world to be."
