BIG3 Commissioner Roger Mason Jr. Fired Over Corruption Allegations
Ice Cube stepped up as the interim Commissioner of the BIG3 basketball league after it was announced on Monday (March 12) that former Commish, Roger Mason Jr. has been fired over findings tying him to alleged corruption within the organization.
In a letter sent to BIG3 players, coaches, and staff, Mason is cited for having violated his employment agreement by actions he took while courting a pair of Qatari investors who allegedly shortchanged the league by millions. The BIG3 currently has Ayman Sabi and Ahmed Al-Rumaihi in court for agreed-upon contributions, which executives seem to believe Mason happened to receive.
Hours after news broke of his dismissal, Mason took to the media to counter that the reason he was actually let go had to do with his attorneys accusing the league of breaching his contract, last week. In a statement that he has since issued on the matter, the former Commissioner accuses BIG3 co-founder Jeff Kwatinetz of having launched "a malicious, defamatory campaign" to prevent him from meeting his contractual duties.
Mason went on to add that during his time with the company, he wasn't the only one who took up an issue with Kwatinetz. Some who are no longer with the BIG3 were forced out, in some cases due to what they deemed to be racist practices, said Mason.
"The work environment at BIG3 has been hostile and racist resulting in the departure of valuable League personnel. Among other matters, a former employee of BIG3 recently told me that Kwatinetz has repeatedly referred to black athletes as 'rich n**gers,'" the statement read in part.
