Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS Students Now Have To Wear Clear Backpacks

Amid a number of security threats that have followed the February shooting that killed 17, students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School will soon be permitted to bring only clear backpacks to class.
A number of teens who attend the Parkland school have taken to social media to voice their disagreement with the policy, which Broward County Public Schools superintendent Robert W. Runcie informed families of in letters sent home this week. In the memo, Runcie promises that each student will be supplied with a new clear bag and that they will be required to use it upon their return from Spring Break. In addition to the backpack rule, students and staff will also need to wear identification badges at all times.
Since the attack over one month ago, several arrests have been made that drew scrutiny to the school's security apparatus. Among them was the booking of gunman Nikolas Cruz's brother Zachary on trespassing charges for skateboarding through the halls to reportedly “reflect on the school shooting and soak it in.” There have also been a couple of busts for students bringing knives, and one deputy was suspended after he was caught sleeping on the job.
There has been word that officials have an increase in security personnel in their plans and are in the process of evaluating whether or not they will bring metal detectors to the district's schools.
