FBI Warns Consumers That Hackers Can Use Smart TVs to Spy on Them

According to CBS News, the FBI has issued a warning to consumers who just bought or are looking to purchase a new smart TV that they face potentially serious security risks. The warning came from the bureau's Portland field office just ahead of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. While there are standard concerns, the FBI believes the latest models offer hackers the opportunity to exploit the smart TV's technology in a way to spy on people.

The FBI's official statement read, in part:

"Hackers can also take control of your unsecured TV, [...] At the low end of the risk spectrum, they can change channels, play with the volume, and show your kids inappropriate videos. In a worst-case scenario, they can turn on your bedroom TV's camera and microphone and silently cyberstalk you."
