Article Image: Johnson & Johnson's Single-Shot Vaccine Endorsed by FDA
In a staff report released Wednesday (February 24), the FDA endorsed Johnson & Johnson's single-shot COVID vaccine. The report is meant to brief the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, which will vote on the request for emergency use authorization for J&J's vaccine on Friday.
The committee is expected to recommend J&J’s vaccine, and if so, like Moderna and Pfizer, the vaccine will be authorized one day after the review. The report shows that the FDA staff found that trial results and safety data for J&J's vaccine were "consistent with the recommendations set forth in FDA’s guidance Emergency Use Authorization for Vaccines to Prevent COVID-19."
Trial data showed 66% overall effectiveness, with 72% in the United States, 66% in Latin America, and 57% in South Africa. It also showed that the vaccine prevented 100% of hospitalizations and deaths. The side effects are similar to Moderna and Pfizer, which include headache and fatigue, muscle aches, nausea, and fever.
This comes as the CDC reports that roughly 44.1 million out of some 331 million Americans have received at least their first dose of Pfizer’s and Moderna’s two-dose vaccines. Over 19 million have already received their second shot.
