Congressman Matt Gaetz Under Investigation for Sex with Teen Girl
According to the New York Times, GOP Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida is under investigation for a possible sexual relationship with an underage girl
Gaetz is part of a larger inquiry into a sex-trafficking ring allegedly headed by former Florida tax collector Joel Greenberg. The investigation into Gaetz is trying to uncover whether he had sex with a 17-year-old girl and if he paid to have her travel with him. If this is the case, it is in clear violation of sex-trafficking laws, which state it is “illegal to induce someone under 18 to travel over state lines to engage in sex in exchange for money or something of value.”
“I only know that it has to do with women,” the congressman said while addressing the matter to reporters. “I have a suspicion that someone is trying to recategorize my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward.”
He also took to Twitter on Tuesday evening to address the report of the investigation. "Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name," wrote Gaetz. "We have been cooperating with federal authorities in this matter," he added.
Gaetz concluded his Twitter thread with, "I demand the DOJ immediately release the tapes, made at their direction, which implicate their former colleague in crimes against me based on false allegations."
