JAKE GYLLENHAAL LOOKING AT LEAD IN BOSTON MARATHON BOMBING DRAMA

Image
Given the guy's talent, it's only a matter of time before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decide to reward Jake Gyllenhaal with his very own Oscar - we're just waiting to see what that feature winds up being. It's entirely possible that it could be the next project he's eying to add to his upcoming slate, which will see him playing a man who lost his legs during the Boston Marathon bombing that occurred back in 2013.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jake Gyllenhaal is now thinking about signing on to Stronger, a new film that is being directed by David Gordon Green (George Washington, Pineapple Express). Should he sign on the dotted line, theNightcrawler star would be playing Jeff Bauman, a survivor of the aforementioned terrorist attack who lost his legs in the explosion. The movie is based on a script by screenwriter John Pollono (and should it get made, it will be his first feature credit).  Adapted from the book of the same nam...

MORE THEATERS ARE ON BOARD FOR CHANGING HOW MOVIES ARE RELEASED

With the vast array of options currently available, the way movies are distributed is changing drastically. As theatrical revenuegets harder and harder to come by, Paramount has come up with a radical endeavor to allow viewers to watch new releases at home much faster than before, and they just signed up a couple of new allies and could indelibly change the way movies hit the open market. According to The Hollywood Reporter, five more theater chains have signed up for Paramount’s plan, which already has the support of AMC, one of the nation’s biggest conglomeration of theaters, and Canada’s Cineplex. The new partners include National Amusements, Alamo Drafthouse, iPic, Landmark Cinemas out of Canada, and Southern Theatres, based in New Orleans. These are all smaller companies, and big boys like Cinemark and Regal have yet to join the party, but together they represent almost 8000 screens, and this certainly illustrates a changing tide in the indust...

IVAN REITMAN DENIES GHOSTBUSTERS SPINOFF AS WRITER OFFERS NEW DETAILS

Image
While the Ghostbusters franchise relaunches next year with an impressive lineup of funny female talent, reports of a subsequent guy-centric counterpart film came and went… until they came back again. Now they might be going again. Writer Drew Pearce, who is attached to the franchise spinoff, straightens the record on the project’s alleged man-filled mandate. At the same time, Ivan Reitman denies its existence.  Reitman, who directed the original twoGhostbusters films and has been tied to the reboots, issued a declarative statement today backing Paul Feig’s planned Ghostbusters and taking the air out of the male-centric adventure. The statement reads:  There has been a lot of excitement recently about what is happening with the Ghostbusters franchise. As the producer of the new Ghostbusters film, I feel the need to clarify. There is only one new Ghostbusters movie and that is the Paul Feig directed version coming next July, presently filming a...

JEREMY RENNER STILL WANTS THAT MATT DAMON BOURNE CROSSOVER MOVIE

Image
Since Jeremy Renner was meant to take over the mantle of the Bourne movie franchise, when Matt Damon decided he wanted to return, things changed in a big way. It’s been made clear, however, that there are still plans for Renner in the Bourne universe. This leads fans to wonder if the two characters will ever cross paths. If that decision is ever made, you can count Aaron Cross in. Speaking with ScreenRant as part of the promotion tour for Mission:Impossible-Rogue Nation Renner said that he loves the Bourne franchise and would be interested in working with (or against) Damon if the studio ever makes that call:  Yeah, I mean in two seconds. I love that world. I love the character. If they want to do that, I’m in. there’s no ‘no’ coming from this direction. It’s hard to imagine that there would be a "no" coming from any direction but you never know. While The Bourne Legacy was not the huge smash that the previous films had been, it put u...

Super Smash Bros.' gets tournament modes and YouTube replays

Image
Nintendo isn't done with the 3DS and Wii U versions of Super Smash Bros. just yet. The company has released an update today which adds tournament modes and the ability to post video replays to YouTube. Both features were teased just before E3, but we weren't expecting a slew of new character outfits and stages to go along with them. Nintendo is offering the Hyrule Castle and Peach's Castle arenas from the original Super Smash Bros. on N64, priced at $1.99 per platform or $2.99 across both. They're joined by a deluge of Mii fighter costumes, including King K. Rool from Donkey Kong, Chrom from Fire Emblem: Awakeningand Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia. All eight are available for $0.75 or $1.15 across both 3DS and Wii U. Alternatively, you can get everything as a bundle for $9.98 or $15.18 on both Nintendo systems. One last thing: there's aK.K. Slider Mii Fighter costume from Animal Crossing too. It's free to download and looks da...

Russell Wilson & Seahawks Agree To Four Year/$87 Million Dollar Deal With $60 Million Guaranteed

Image
Seahawks fans can officially stop worrying if they will have their young quarterback of the future for years to come. Russell Wilson just agreed this morning to a 4 year extension with the Seahawks, worth about $87 million. The big part of the deal is the $60 million in guaranteed money! All this is great news for the team and fans as there will be no added stress of contract talks hanging over their heads during the season as Wilson would have become a free agent. The deal got done at the last second as the Hawks start camp today and both sides made it clear there would be no talks during the season. The question still remains however, did the Seahawks just make a huge mistake in giving Wilson this much money? Yes he had helped guide the team to two straight Super Bowls, but we all know his skill set was not the leading factor in the teams success recently. It has been the defense and Beast Mode. I know Russell hasn’t done anything to ruin games for the team but what will happ...

Sprint's new family plan offers four lines with 40GB of shared data for $120 per month

Image
n an attempt to encourage carrier switching at the family level, Sprint has just announced a new Family Share Pack. Unfortunately, although the new family plans are well priced compared to similar plans on any other major carriers, your family will have to port four lines from another carrier in order to take advantage of the offer.  In its basic form, Sprint's new family plan is priced at $100 per month and includes four lines with unlimited talk and text, as well as a bucket of 10GB high-speed data that's to be shared between the four lines. If you need more data, Sprint will upgrade the shared data bucket to 40GB of high-speed data for $120 per month. On top of this, Sprint will also discard the per-line data access charge, but only as long as you continue to pay for your new family plan. Sprint claims that its new family plan is much more affordable than similar plans from other major carriers in the United States, and it looks like this affirmation actually holds water. ...

T-Mobile adds over 1 million postpaid subscribers for the fourth straight quarter

Image
For the fourth consecutive quarter, T-Mobile has reported over 1 million net new postpaid subscribers. Of that figure, 760,000 were branded postpaid phone additions. Postpaid phone churn was 1.3%, down from the 1.46% posted during last year's second quarter. Overall, the mobile operator reported 2.1 million net new additions, which is the 9th straight quarter that this metric produced over 1 million new customers for the carrier. T-Mobile reported revenue for the quarter of $8.2 billion, up 14% year-over-year. Net income for the quarter amounted to $361 million (or 49 cents a share), up sequentially from the $63 million net loss (or -9 cents a share) reported for the first quarter of this year.  T-Mobile is closing in on its target of covering 300 million Americans with 4G LTE. Right now, that figure is at 290 million. 212 markets are covered with Wideband LTE and the carrier hopes to hit 250 by the end of the year. T-Mobile has also covered 141 markets with 700 MHz A-Block spect...

Old school streaming: AT&T reportedly wants working FM chips in all Android smartphones

With so many music streaming services now trying to emulate old school radio channels, one might be tempted to think that FM radios are still one of the most basic features of any smartphone. However, although most modern smartphones have the hardware that's required of them in order to access FM radio channels, you'll be hard pressed to find a smartphone that actually comes with a working FM radio.  If you're thinking that this is the wrong way to go looking forward, you'll be glad to know that AT&T allegedly feels the same way. If a new report from RadioWorld is to be believed, AT&T wants smartphone makers to include a working FM radio in their handsets. Since this is an unconfirmed rumor, make sure to digest it with the proverbial grain of salt. According to the report, all smartphone makers who want to sell their phones through AT&T will have to include a working FM radio starting with 2016. Furthermore, since many current-generation handsets have the ...

Military drone helped look for missing schoolteacher

Image
The Air National Guard has sent a drone -- an actual MQ-9 Reaper and not a small hobbyist machine -- to help find a missing schoolteacher in San Francisco. He was last seen riding his blue motorcycle on July 17th. The drone was deployed on Wednesday morning and flew for a few hours, scouring the El Dorado National Forest using infrared and its high-tech cameras to look for any sign of the 46-year-old high school instructor, Edward Cavanaugh. While its efforts didn't pay off in the end (the teacher hasn't been found yet), it's a nice reminder that drones can also be used for good. It's easy to forget that when you often hear bad things, such as how they hindered aerial firefighting efforts in the same state, how big companies want to use them to inject spyware and how the government uses them for surveillance. They can be incredibly helpful in search andrescue operations, especially when you're dealing with locations humans can't go to, such as ...

Facebook's 'Security Checkup' is ready to guard your account

Security Checkup is designed to make finding and enabling Facebook's multitude of optionalsecurity settings much easier. Users will be able to automatically logout of rarely used devices, set alerts for suspicious login activity and reset their password. Even finding the checkup function itself will be a snap as it's going to be positioned at the top of your feed for the next few weeks. Engadget

Law & Order Director Arrested on Child Pornography Charges

Image
Jason Alexander, known for directing episodes of Law & Order and Rescue Me, was arrested in Westchester County, New York on charges of child pornography.  Alexander, who is the Second Vice-President of the Director's Guild of America, was charged with the crimes after an investigator was able to download child pornography from an IP address belonging to the director. A search warrant was then issued on Alexander's home, where digital files of children who are less than 16 years of age engaged in child pornography were found on hard drives from his computers.  The director is now facing seven years in prison if he's found convicted of the one felony count of promoting a sexual performance by a child and one felony count of possessing an obscene sexual performance by a child. Alexander is currently being held on $10,000 bond and he's expected to appear in court again on November 19.  Source: The Wrap

Bail Set at $1 Million For Officer Who Murdered Samuel Dubose

Image
Today Judge Megan E. Shanahan set former officer Ray Tensing's bail at $1 million for the shooting death of 43-year-old Samuel Dubose. Tensing shot Dubose in the head after stopping him for a missing front license plate on July 19 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has since been indicted for his murder. According to an incident report filed a day after the fatal shooting, officers seemingly backed Tensing who attested to Dubose trying to drag him as he attempted to open the car door. The video released yesterdaydoesn't show what the officers detailed, and today in court Tensing pleaded not guilty via his lawyer as he stood there clad in jail attire.  Dubose's family stood in the Hamilton County courtroom as Tensing's lawyer pleaded with the judge to make his bail "something reasonable." "The defendant is facing the possibility of life in prison. It's the court's duty to ensure his appearance. The bond will be $1 million," was her res...

Lexus will officially unveil its hoverboard on August 5th

Image
On August 5th, Lexus will finally reveal itshoverboard, which has been in development for the past 18+ months, to the public. Let that sink in for a bit: Lexus has created a working hoverboard in 2015, the year Marty and Doc Brown jumped to in Back to the FutureUnfortunately, we don't know if you'd be able to buy one before October 21st -- or at all, really -- but even if it does become available for purchase in the next few months, you can't ride it to a B2F anniversary screening. See, it can only levitate over metallic surfaces, so it's pretty much useless in most places. That's about the extent of what we know about the device, though Lexus is bound to divulge more info during the event.

Google reportedly tried to buy a veggie burger company

Image
Google has explored at least a few fields that have precious little to do with internet searches, but sources for The Information claim that it nearly went in a very unusual direction: the fast food business. The folks in Mountain View reportedly tried to buy Impossible Foods, a startup developing plant-based alternatives to meat and cheese, for between $200 million to $300 million. The young firm's crowning achievement so far is a veggie cheeseburger (you're looking at it above) that should taste like the real deal when it arrives later this year. If the rumor is accurate, Google only balked because Impossible wanted a higher sale price. Just why Google would branch out to edibles isn't clear, although the company has explored food in the past. Co-founder Sergey Brin helped fund a burger made solely from stem cells, for example. However, the most logical explanation is that this reflects Google's recent fondness for projects tha...

T-Mobile making moves - carrier will let iPhone 6 owners upgrade to the next iPhone for zilch, makes Apple Music streaming free

Image
t looks like Apple and the USA's magenta-colored carrier have forged a beautiful friendship, as T-Mobile has "amped" its Music Freedom and upgraded its JUMP! On demand services with fantastic propositions for iPhone owners. First off, T-Mo added Apple Music to its list of 33 music services that stream for free over the carrier's data network. It's what customers want, apparently, as 80% of the music streaming service requests on Twitter spelled "Apple Music". Good listening on T-Mo's part! Before we cover the "so they're offering the iPhone 6s for free?!" part, we're going to paste this blurb by CEO John Legere, as we have to admit, the words here are strong: Not surprisingly, Music Freedom has been an enormous hit with Un-carrier customers. They now stream over 131 million songs every single day – up an amazing 275% from a year ago when we launched Music Freedom. If AT&T customers streamed that much music, they could be payi...

Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile now offer 1GB and 2GB Data Packs to keep you from the horrors of 2G

Image
No one likes to be throttled. No one. So customers of Sprint's pre-paid providers Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile are getting an opportunity to add more data to their plans, to keep them from exceeding their data cap. Thanks to the carriers' Data Packs, an extra $5 will tack an additional 1GB of data to your plan, and $10 will buy you twice that much (no surprise there). If you see that you are using more data than planned, even in the middle of the month, purchasing a Data Pack can save you from the horrifying experience of using 2G data Boost currently offers unlimited talk, text and data plans. But one you go over the amount of high speed data you've purchased, you are throttled to 2G speeds. For $35 a month, you will have 1GB of 3G/4G data. For $45 a month, your data cap rises to 5GB of 3G/4G data. Spend $10 more each month, and you'll have 10GB of 3G/4G data. As a special offer, those rockin' a 4G-LTE phone and willing to sign up for auto-pay, can receive unl...

Bobbi Kristina Dead At Age 22

Image
of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown has died.  In a statement to Entertainment Tonight, the family thanked the fans for their support and says Kristina is at peace with God.  "She is finally at peace in the arms of God," the Houston family said. "We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months." Kristina was hospitalized in January after she was found unresponsive in her bathtub by boyfriend Nick Gordon. She was later put on a ventilator to assist with breathing at the North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, Georgia. After there was a failure of improvement in her status, she was put in a medically induced coma at Atlanta's Emory University Hospital. With photographers and fans watching the family's every move, she was moved to an hospice center in June.  The family has feuded with Grodon about his role in the incident. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is working with the family an...

Amazon wants to build drive-up grocery stores

Image
If you enjoy the luxury of ordering groceries online but would rather not wait at home for your food deliveries, Amazon might soon come to your rescue. Silicon Valley Business Journal understands that Amazon is working on a drive-up grocery store in Sunnyvale, California (a possible concept rendering is shown here) that will rely solely on internet orders -- you'd schedule pickups instead of wandering aisles. Think of it as an AmazonFresh depot that could save you shipping costs while adapting to your schedule. Amazon isn't commenting on the project, and it's not clear just how many of these stores will pop up. The Sunnyvale experiment is likely to expand to other areas in Silicon Valley, but there's no certainty that it'll ever rival a big chain like Safeway. However, there's no question that the concept makes a lot of sense for Amazon. It eliminates many of the headaches associated with shipping food directly to your door (how do you deliver a mix of fresh ...

Nintendo wants to build a sleep monitor with a projector

Image
Nintendo first announced its intention to develop a sleep monitor as part of its " quality of life" initiative in 2014. Now, thanks to a recently published patent unearthed by NeoGAF forum members, we have an idea of what the system could look like. The gamemaker is apparently planning to build a sensor-laden alarm clock-like gadget that's equipped with a projector. Since the documents are mostly in Japanese, we only have their summaries and the device's illustration to go by, which you can see below the fold. It's unclear at this point if the sleep monitor is a two-device system, or if it's just the dock and the handset-like drawing is merely the user's smartphone. Either way, Nintendo's tracker will be equipped with sensors, microphone and a camera that will keep track of the user's temperature and pulse rate, among other things. It will then use the data it collects to assess a user's emotional state and calculate his/her "sleep scor...

Here's an iPhone charging cable that stores a whopping 128GB of your content

Image
Even though there is a 128GB version of the Apple iPhone 6 and the Apple iPhone 6 Plus , there are consumers out there who would rather not spend the astronomical amount of money required to purchase one of these phones, even if they need to store large amounts of content. There are other external storage options available to iPhone owners. To that list, we soon could be adding the PhotoFast MemoriesCable. Like the regular cable that comes with your iPhone, the MemoriesCable can be used to charge your iPhone, or to sync it your computer or other devices. When used with the PhotoFast app, you can store 128GB worth of your photos, movies, tunes and other content. And thanks to the required use of Touch ID with the app, there is a layer of security that will keep unwanted eyes from gazing on your stored content. The accessory has yet to be announced, but we understand that it will be made available with 64GB and 128GB of storage. Pricing isn't known at present, and that obviously wi...

Sprint gives family seven iPhones, 10 years of service, and a huge check on new FOX show

Image
Imagine your surprise when you open the door to find David Beckham with a host of television cameras staring you in the face. That is what happened to the Gonzalez family on Friday's debut ofKnock, Knock Live, Ryan Seacrest's new FOX show. The idea is that a camera crew goes to randomly selected homes with a celebrity in tow, ready to bestow prizes on homeowners. The big winner on the debut show was a family that had actually been nominated for the honor of receiving a surprise visit from Beckham. The Gonzalez family was as excited as could be, welcoming the soccer star into their home. And since Mr. Beckham has become the new face of Sprint on television ads, the carrier used this air time for a bit of promotion. Sprint (through Beckham) gave seven family members each a brand-new Apple iPhone. While the model wasn't revealed, we would assume it was the 4.7-inch Apple iPhone 6 that was handed out. Even better, Beckham then revealed that the family would have t...

Bobby Shmurda Facing Additional Prison Time Over Shank Case

Image
Bobby Shmurda is looking at more jail time after he was found with a sharpened object after a visit from his alleged girlfriend. According to The Guardian, the "Bobby B****" rapper was caught with the contraband in Rikers Island after 18-year-old Kimberly Rousseau was seen pulling a "sharpened metal instrument" from her bra. Sources close to Shmurda confirmed with VladTV that Rousseau isn't his girlfriend, but a fanthat managed to get onto his visitors list. The rapper pleaded not guilty to charges of felony and misdemeanour charges of promoting prison contraband, perjury and criminal possession of a weapon on Thursday. If convicted, he faces an additional seven years in prison. The rapper is currently facing 25 years for his alleged role in several gang related incidents. Rousseau was charged with felony and misdemeanor counts of promoting prison contraband and a misdemeanor count of criminal possession of a weapon. She will return to court in August after ...

BILL COSBY HAS BEEN CUT OUT OF A NEW MOVIE BECAUSE OF COURSE

Image
If there’s any public figure that people are running from faster than Donald Trump, it’s Bill Cosby. The actor and comedian who has been accused of multiple counts of rape and has been left out in the cold by even his most ardent supporters. He’s now been cut from a new film that he had a large part in helping create. Painted Down is a documentary about the history of black stunt men and women in Hollywood. After standing behind Cosby back in November, when the most recent allegations were fresh, Deadline reports that the film’s producers have now had to change their tune and cut Cosby from the piece. Producer Nonie Robinson had this to say: We were the last project standing behind him, but now with Whoopi (Goldberg) and CAA pulling the plug, we must also disassociate and cut all ties with Cosby. It’s the right thing to do in light of the recent court deposition being made public. In the deposition in question, Cosby reportedly admits to obtaining quaalud...

WHAT GAL GADOT DIDN'T WANT HER WONDER WOMAN TO BE

Image
Approximately a year and a half ago DC Comics and Warner Bros. announced thatFast & Furious star Gal Gadot will play Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  Despite not being one of the eponymous heroes, the Amazonian is set to have a key role not just in that film, but the overall DC Extended Universe. Playing arguably the world’s most famous superheroine is a tremendous opportunity for any actress, but it’s an especially big deal for Gadot given that the character matches key criteria the actress looks for in a role. Gadot told Interview Magazine that when she started out as an actress in Los Angeles, she originally told writers and directors that she had an open mind for roles, but eventually changed her stance and made it clear she wanted to be "able to show the stronger side of women." AsGadot put it: I didn’t want to do the obvious role that you see in Hollywood most of the time, which is the heartbroken girl who’s...

CRANK 3 MIGHT ACTUALLY HAPPEN

Image
Never underestimate the determination of a filmmaker, as it's one of the most powerful creative forces in the world. It's what's kept Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote alive long enough to become an Amazon project, and it's also what might net us a new Hellboy film – provided Pacific Rim 2 pulls down the cash to warrant it. Most importantly, at least when it comes to the duo commonly known as Neveldine/Taylor, it's what might bring Chev Chelios back for one more round of jacked up carnage in Crank 3!  Screen Crush recently interviewed one half of the directing collective that brought us the first two entries in the Crank series, as well as Gamer and Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance Mark Neveldine. With his new film The Vatican Tapes due for release this Friday, it seemed like a good time to catch up with the first time solo director, as he's ready to strike it out on his own at the multi...

THE LOGAN'S RUN REMAKE JUST TOOK A HUGE STEP FORWARD

Image
A remake of the dystopian 1976 science fiction film Logan’s Run has been in the works for what feels like damn near forever. Over the years numerous directors and stars have been linked to the project, which seemed like it was never going to happen. Well now it has taken a big step forward, though who knows if this is the one we’ll finally see in theaters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros., the studio that has been attempting to mount a remake of Logan’s Run since 2000, has hired Simon Kinberg to write the story treatment for the latest attack. He will also produce with Joel Silver, though a writer to be hired down the road will ultimately handle the full script. Kinberg is a writer and producer behind a ton of superhero movies, including the upcoming Fantastic Four, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Deadpool. And just for good measure he dabbles in the expanding Star Wars universe as well with the Anthology...

HOW MARVEL TREATS ITS MOVIES DIFFERENT FROM ITS NETFLIX SHOWS

Even though all of Marvel’s live-action projects take place in the same universe, they don’t all have the same tone and feel. Just look to Daredevil for proof. Aside from veering into R-rated territory, theNetflix series is also a more intimate adventure that stays away from the fantastical world seen in the movies, delving instead into a gritty crime story. While Daredevil and the other Netflix shows still embrace their superhero roots, it turns out these smaller-scale adventures are the main thing that separates them from their cinematic colleagues. Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada talked to IGN about how their Netflix shows, including the upcoming Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, andIron Fist, allow the MCU to tell darker stories, which is why their exploits are smaller in comparison to the the global conflicts the Avengers and the other big screen heroes handle. Quesada said: The Avengers are about saving the world...

WHY PIXELS CUT SUPER MARIO FROM ITS ENDING

n every movie there is footage that doesn’t make it into the final cut. For a film like Pixels which is heavily reference laden, the point of the movie is to fill it with nostalgic video game characters. That means that some of those scenes don’t make it into the finished film. Such is the case with an original ending that would have included Super Mario. Speaking with ScreenCrush, Pixels directorChris Columbus spoke about a closing scene with the famous plumber that they ended up not using:  We tried it. There was a moment we even did a preview of it, we thought it was interesting but we wanted to kind of use him somewhere else. I don’t want to spoil the fact that he may be somewhere else in the film... Columbus went on to note that the appearance Mario does make in the film actually turned out to be a bigger moment for the audience than the ending with Mario. The original ending, found in an earlier version of the script,  ...

THE FUNNY REASON THOR MADE A CAMEO IN ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING

Image
Virtually everyobody of a certian generation remembers the 1987 hit Adventures in Babysitting fondly. One of it’s best-remembered scenes is one is the one in which Thor-obsessed child Sara (Maia Brewton) believes the mechanic fixing their car is, in fact, the Asgardian god. But why is the little girl so into Thor? Turns out it’s because director Chris Columbus had no idea who He-Man and She-Ra were. Speaking with Yahoo Movies, Columbus talked about his directorial debut and how he’d never even heard of He-Man and She-Ra, the characters that Sara was supposed to be in love with. He said: In the original script, the young girl was obsessed with characters named He-Man and She-Ra...At the time, those characters meant nothing to me. But I was a huge Marvel comic book fanatic, and so I thought Thor would be an interesting character to go with — not having any idea that twenty years from then, all movies would be based on comic books. We have to fault Columbus ...

Jay Z & Will Smith Team Up for Emmett Till Miniseries

Image
Just a couple of days before what would have been Emmett Till's 74th birthday, Deadline reports that Will Smith and Jay Z have an HBO Miniseries about his fate in the works. Emmett Till was a 14-year-old boy who was tortured and murdered for allegedly speaking to a white woman in 1955 in Mississippi. While his murderers would later admit to his killing, it was acquitted and would later have a part in igniting the Civil Rights Movement. Jay Z, Will Smith, Roc Nation's Jay Brown, James Lassiter of Overbook Entertainment and Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment are executive producing the 6 episode, untitled miniseries. There are still no writers or actors involved on the series yet, as of now the idea is in active development with no premiere date. Will Smith and Jay Z have previously worked as co-producers to remake 2014'sAnnie and paired up for Fela! the Broadway show inspired by Fela Kuti. Jay Z also executive produced the soundtrack to 2012's Free Angela and Al...

50 Cent to Pay Additional $2 Mil to Woman in Sex Tape Scandal

Image
pite him declaring bankruptcy a couple of weeks ago, 50 Cent was ordered to pay Leviston an additional $2 million after releasing her sex tape online and tarnishing her image. 50 Cent didn't make an appearance today at Manhattan Supreme Court, where Leviston was seen smiling ear to ear. The jury decided that on top of the $5 million she should receive for his actions, 50 should pay Leviston two million dollars more in punitive damages - she originally requested $15 million. "We had to compromise," said jury foreman Tom Evans, 72. "Some wanted (to award) more, some wanted less." Many of them argued that Mr. Jackson has more than what he's previously claimed, adding their belief that he wasn't taking the case seriously. "He has it. He's 50 Cent. You know he has more than 50 cents," said juror Sylvia Rodriguez. "He was winking at one of us, and then he just ran out of the courtroom. That wasn't necessary." Going forward, Levis...

Sorority Girl Charged With Murder After Killing Baby on Campus

Image
Emile Weaver, 20, was charged on Thursday (July 23) with allegedly murdering her newborn baby after giving birth at the Delta Gamma Theta sorority house on Muskingum University's campus. The incident occurred on April 22, and the Columbus Dispatch reports that the Ohio student put the baby in a plastic bag while it was alive and placed it in the trash outside of the university-owned house where they baby died of asphyxiation. Weaver is being held on a $1 million bail and is facing life in prison if convicted of charges that include aggravated murder, abuse of a corpse and two counts of tampering with evidence after she cleaned up the blood and other fluids from giving birth. Some of the woman's sorority sisters were in the house at the time she gave birth, but it's unclear whether they knew what Weaver was going through.  Source: NY Daily News

Just a couple of days after the DoJ said the deal could go through and FCC Commissioner Tom Wheeler recommend its approval,  the FCC voted  to make the $49 billion AT&T / DirecTV  combo official -- with a few conditions. As we'd heard, the approval comes with strings (in place for four years) including a requirement AT&T expand its fiber network, hook up gigabit internet to eligible schools and libraries and provide affordable standalone internet for low-income customers in its service areas. Another requirement is aimed at AT&T's data usage caps, saying it can't use them to discriminate against other video services. The other net neutrality requirement says AT&T will have to disclose any interconnect agreements --  the ones Netflix is so concerned about  -- to the FCC so it can monitor the terms. Are those requirements enough to make the deal worth it? Consumer advocate  like the Free Press  say no, but with the FCC's blessing the deal...

John Russel Houser, a 59-year old drifter from Alabama, who at the time of the shooting he was living in a nearby motel. Houser, who turned the gun on himself after causing mass hysteria, is one of the three dead following the shooting. Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said during the press conference that judging by the position of the gunman’s 1995 blue Lincoln Continental he was “intent on shooting and escaping.” That failed however, when police forced him back into the theater and he proceeded to shoot himself. Police also found wigs and glasses inside Houser’s motel room. 21-year-old Mayci Breaux and 33-year-old Jillian Johnson were killed when Houser shot off thirteen rounds into the theater. THE STAR WARS ROLE MICHAEL JACKSON REALLY WANTED TO PLAY

Image
Michael Jackson is known as the King of Pop for a very good reason: he’s the artist behind some of the most memorable pop songs of all time. While primarily known for his music, Jackson also had a sporadic acting career over the years, and there was one role in the Star Wars prequels that he apparently really wanted. As bizarre as it sounds, Michael Jackson had his heart set on playing Jar Jar Binks. Vice recently caught up with Ahmed Best, the actor who played Jar Jar in George Lucas’ prequels, starting with Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace in 1999. They asked him about a comment he made in a Reddit AMA where he mentioned Michael Jackson wanting the Jar Jar role, curious if it was a joke or not. But no, according to Best, Lucas himself told him this. He recalled being backstage at a Michael Jackson concert with Lucas, his kids, and Natalie Portman, and when they met the King of Pop, Best said: George introduced me as "J...

Sharknado 4' Is Happening, and You Can Choose the Plot

Image
Because three "Sharknado" movies just aren't enough, Syfy has already greenlit "Sharknado 4" -- and fans can control a major plot point in the flick. As those who watched the "Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!" premiere on Wednesday night already know (SPOILERS ahead), the movie ended on a cliff-hanger centered around Tara Reid's character, April. After having just sawed her way out of a shark -- and delivered a baby inside its belly -- April is embracing her family on the beach when a piece of space debris (it makes sense, kind of, if you watched the film) comes crashing down toward her head. So does she survive? That's what fans of the franchise get to decide, as no sooner had the flick faded to black did the hashtags #AprilLives and #AprilDies appeared on the screen, with Syfy imploring viewers to use social media (and a dedicated voting page) to determine if April will be back for round four. An announcer declared, "Her fate will be revealed ...

LeBron James May Be Making 'Space Jam 2'

Image
Fresh off his hilarious turn in "Trainwreck," LeBron James may be taking his talents to a beloved '90s film. Earlier this week, James and Warner Bros. announced a partnership between the studio and James's production company, SpringHill Entertainment, that many believe means that a long-rumored remake or sequel to "Space Jam" with James at the helm will soon become a reality. The 1996 flick featured basketball greats including Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, and Larry Bird teaming up with classic Looney Tunes characters to take on a group of evil aliens. "To be able to partner with Warner Bros. will allow me to do some things I've always dreamed of," James said in a statement. He added on his official Facebook page, "Can't wait to bring you guys some amazing stories." Reading between the lines, it sounds like "Space Jam 2" is all but a sure thing, though a Deadline report from last year linking LeBron ...

Image
A gunman fatally shot at least one person and injured eight others at a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, before killing himself on Thursday, according to police and local media. NBC News reported that one person died and eight others were wounded at the Grand Theatre in Lafayette before the gunman took his own life. Those reports could not immediately be confirmed by Reuters, but Lafayette police said in a tweet that they were "working a shooting at the Grand Theater on Johnston Street" and that it involved multiple victims. The local Advertiser newspaper reported that the gunfire broke out during a 7 p.m. showing of the film "Train Wreck". Witness Katie Domingue told the paper that the gunman was an older white man who stood up in the theater and began shooting. "He wasn't saying anything. I didn't hear anybody screaming either," Domingue said. "Prayers for Lafayette at Grand Theater. Talking to state police colonel about shooting...
